The Growing Relevance of HEOR: Turning Complex Healthcare Questions Into Actionable Evidence

Strategic Analytics, Value and Economics

September 24, 2026

For the first time, ISPOR added “Relevance of HEOR: Demonstrating the Field’s Vital Role in Health” to its Top 10 HEOR Trends list. Informed by a survey of HEOR specialists from around the globe, the report describes health economics and outcomes research (HEOR) as a “science that can help inform and improve virtually every healthcare decision, with the potential to transform healthcare at the systems level.”

Here at ADVI, we couldn’t agree more. The addition of this trend strongly resonates with the work our teams carry out every day. As healthcare systems become increasingly complex, HEOR methodologies are playing an expanding role in addressing questions across a broad set of healthcare applications, therapeutic areas, and clinical challenges. Our research and consulting teams have applied HEOR approaches to help clients across the life sciences and pharmaceutical industries to address questions ranging from disease burden and treatment effectiveness to patient outcomes and adverse event management.

At the same time, the growing availability of real-world data is transforming the evidence that can be generated and evaluated. Providers, patients, payers, and other healthcare stakeholders increasingly need actionable insights from these data to understand what is happening in real-world clinical settings. Together, these trends have created a greater need for rigorous evidence that not only characterizes healthcare challenges but also helps identify practical solutions and demonstrate their impact on real-world results.

Our strategic analytics, value and economics (SAVEs) solution team at ADVI conducts a variety of studies focused on demonstrating value and identifying solutions to health outcomes challenges. Our clients in the pharmaceutical and MedTech spaces often turn to us when they need to answer questions that cannot be adequately addressed using more traditional data sources, such as claims or clinical trial data.

Working closely with our clients, we have designed and managed projects using  comparative effectiveness and real-world evidence, patient-centered outcomes, expert elicitation panels, and examining disease burden.

Examples

Client objective: Identify patients with a specific phenotype in the absence of an ICD-10 diagnostic code

Possible solutions:

  1. Conduct a claims algorithm study which can be validated in claims and patient electronic health records
  2. Explore clinical history, biomarkers, or clinical assessment data in patients with certain clinical characteristics or treatment histories to conduct a medical chart review study and work with academic and medical centers across the country to obtain a clearer picture of patients’ healthcare resource utilization

Client objective: Addressing treatment-related adverse events

Possible solution:

Conduct a RAND/UCLA modified Delphi panel  regarding the management of adverse events following a therapy’s introduction to the market, we can conduct a RAND/UCLA modified Delphi panel, bringing together 9-12 expert clinicians or advanced practice practitioners to develop appropriate consensus-based management recommendations. The value of our work can be widely disseminated across national and international conferences and peer-reviewed academic journals. HEOR methodologies are highly versatile and efficient at answering real-world healthcare questions.

As HEOR specialists, we see the applicability and value of this work every day. With each new healthcare innovation and therapeutic milestone comes a set of new questions: How does this change patient outcomes? Who benefits? What challenges emerge in real-world practice? How can healthcare systems respond effectively? These are questions that HEOR is uniquely positioned to help answer, and ADVI is excited to take on.
